Surreal musings from the ex-Moldy Peach. Those expecting more string-laden acoustica from anti-folk’s favourite troubadour are in for a shock. Gemstones is a baffling mishmash of time signatures and styles. Crackhouse Blues is possibly the only psychedelic honky-tonk song about drug addicts, while Before My Bedtime fairly bursts with country drama. The brilliance of Adam Green is not in his dreamy deadpan vocal, but rather his ability to couch the surreal in the everyday. Sure, it’s willfully quirky, but a man who sings “Her lips taste just like sunken ships/But her breasts taste just like breakfast” should be celebrated. Adam Green – Gemstones, released 24 January 05 on Rough Trade.
