The boy who sang Wolf. What is it with Bonnie Prince Billy’s lupine fascination? The standout track on his last album was called Wolf Among Wolves and his website features detailed information about the habits of werewolves. The strange thing is, his gently-picked electric folk music couldn’t sound less wolf-like. The Superwolf project came about when Bonnie challenged his friend, ex-Guided By Voices and Zwan guitarist Matt Sweeney, to a songwriting duel. The result is no great departure from Bonnie’s solo work. His hymnal ballads are occasionally lifted by Sweeney’s crunchy guitar riffs but the hypnotic and spiritual atmosphere he creates remains intact. Matt Sweeney & Bonnie Prince Billy – Superwolf, released 17 January 05 on Domino.
