‘Hurry On Now’ is both the first track on the debut album as well as the first single release for Ms Russell. Written with TM Juke and bearing his trademark hazy, downtempo grooves and piano tinkling throughout, Russell’s sassy voice complements it wonderfully. Gritty in places, ethereal in others, the listener is treated to vocals that are as emotionally taxing as they are beautifully crafted. On the flipside is the quirky but affectionate ‘Do It’; a collaboration with Bristolian producers Unforscene in which Alice’s soul-drenched, liquid voice meets a heavy funk bassline with bouncy percussion and synthy stabs. Though more upbeat and nightclub-orientated, it retains the sassy confidence of Russell and matches it with it’s own brassy credence. Assuredly this will be a dancefloor hit with the likes of Gilles Peterson, particularly since the vinyl release comes complete with instrumentals and an acapella rendering it essential for all discerning nu-soul DJs. ‘Hurry On Now’ is released on Tru Thoughts, Monday 24th January
