Paul Brill- New Pagan Love Song

BRILLLiant!!!"
One sign of a great artist is that they progress when they release a new album some just improve their sound and some go into new territories. So far in 2004 I can only recall two artist that manged to achieve the latter. The first one is Juana Molina, whose second album ‘Tres Cosas’ eclipsed her first effort and the second is Paul Brill. In the past one can say that Brill dabbled mostly with folk but here he has made a giant leap.
‘New Pagan Love Song’ manages to merge both acoustic and electronic instruments very effortlessly, in fact everything blends so well with each other that one would think that performing such a task is piss easy. Take the song ‘Comeback Kid’ a loping beat that shuffles along nicely until there is an acoustic break, some dj scratchings and then a return to the loping beat again. Basically the whole album is awash with creativity and with each listen it envelopes you in a bear like hug- I dare not to get chills while listening to Brill’s version of The Doors ‘Indian Summer’ (pity its not the Beat Happening version- that would have been cool)
Anyway enough of me yapping about the greatness of this amazing album- investigate, devour, enjoy.
