![]() bloomberg new contemporaries
Painting is back at the Barbican in London. Bloomberg have given themselves a simple remit for their new exhibition at the Barbican – bring together 32 young artists pouring out of British art schools in 2003 and see what happens. The results are boring, rubbish and sometimes truly impressive. If the show is a litmus test as to the vibe of modern art then shock isn’t working. Apart from a rather strange obsession with taxidermy for photographers, the only schlock art is a horrific video close-up of an artist eye being fiddled with by Yvonne Jones. Painting with a touch of outsider naivety is big, and you’ll be sure to hear more of James Connelly’s hilarious titles, Robert Nicol’s murderous hooded figures and Lynette Yiadom-Boakye’s snarling portraits. Tessa Farmer’s Swarm is the true star of the show. The artist collected dead bees, flies, hornets and dragonflies. Suspended in the air on strings, each dead insect is “ridden” by little stick people, like evil faeries from hell. Immediately engaging. Bloomberg New Contemporaries is at the Barbican, London, until 15 January 05.
