The Earlies / Micah P Hinson / Half Cousin @ The Scala 25 Oct 04
First up, Half Cousin are an interesting proposition. I say that because they seem to be a band to admire rather than really enjoy. They’ve got good ideas, and are trying to do something that’s their own, which is a fine thing, but you can’t help but think something’s missing. Fair enough, they make a great racket, and do their percussion and rhythm pretty well, but there’s a bit of a lack of songs. They move your butt, but not your soul.

You can’t say that about Micah P Hinson though. I saw him a few months ago supporting Joanna Newsom, but he’s a different proposition tonight. For one he’s got a full backing band, which seem to consist of half of the Earlies (who are his mates and produced his debut album), and he’s certainly increased in confidence, as he steps up to the mike to deliver his incredible deep gravely vocals. The songs sound robust and totally fantastic tonight, from the gorgeous downbeat ‘beneath the rose’ through the tough waltz of ‘stand in my way’ to the monumental closers ‘don’t you forget’ and ‘the day Texas sank to the bottom of the sea’. He’s on fire tonight, in his own restrained way. He should be a star. I hope he can handle it. Probably one of the best support slots I’ve seen.

The Earlies are on fine form as well. Coming onto the strains of ‘wouldn’t it be nice’ they launch into a superb beefed-up version of ‘bring it back again’. There’s 11 of them up there on stage, with a huge range of instruments, and they’re cramming so much into their psychedelic pop songs from ‘these were the Earlies’ and turning them into a live experience which makes them sound even better. The harmonies are right on the button throughout, the lovely ‘wayward song’ sounds funkier, ‘song for No.3’ sounds even more like pop perfection, and there’s a mammoth version of ‘morning wonder’ which only serves to confirm its place as one of the singles of the year. This is their biggest show to date, but I can’t help but think that I won’t see them in a venue even this size again for a while – if there’s any justice, they’re destined for greater things.
