A hip-hop wife-swap gives birth to a winner. Quannum’s line-ups are turning into a ménage à quatre. After solo albums from Blackalicious’ Gift Of Gab and Latyrx’s Lyrics Born, their respective partners, Chief Xcel and Lateef, get together for their own extramarital dalliance. In contrast with the flaccid organic rap of their spouses, Ambush combines Quannum’s traditional virtues of hard-edged hip-hop with well-nourished melodies, Matter Of Fact dropping rich keyboards and rollicking brass into the mix while If goes Bush-bashing over slow-building funk. Maroons have just rescued a poor year for their crew. Lateef & The Chief present Maroons – Ambush, released 25 October 04 on Quannum.
