Director Park Chan-wook plots his revenge.

Robbed of the Palme D’Or (though it did win the Grand Jury prize) by Michael Moore’s ego-driven polemic, Fahrenheit 9/11, Park Chan-wook’s Oldboy is without doubt one of the most powerful and affecting revenge tales ever devised. Oh Dae-su (Min-sik Choi) finds himself imprisoned in one room with a television for 15 years, oblivious to who his captors are and why he is there. He is suddenly released, given a wallet and a mobile phone and told to discover the reason for his ordeal, a task that comprises torture, murder and an unlikely love affair. Min-sik Choi is an ageless powerhouse in the lead, while Park has created a stylish, beautiful, horrific and truly staggering cinematic experience.

Ben Arnold 15 October 04 rating of 4 and 1/2
