But it was worth coming tonight for the Magic Numbers, a new band that we definitely need. They’ve had some glowing reviews from their mainly support slots so far this year, and they’re an odd proposition – two sets of brothers and sisters make up the four-piece, who have a wonderful lack of pin-up quality, lots of hair and a straight-outta-76 look. When they started playing, they did take me a bit by surprise. I’d been listening to their fine debut single ‘Hymn for Her’ for the past few weeks on Sean Rowley’s radio programme, so was fully expecting them to be a folky-pop type of outfit, so nothing could have prepared me for the full onslaught of their good-time Southern rock ’n’ roll psychedelic country soul tunes. At times coming on a bit like Kings of Leon with female vocal harmonies, at others producing beautifully warm folky ballads. There are lots of rousing choruses, ooohs and aaahs, honky tonk guitar solos, and even a xylophone solo to add to the heady brew. ‘Hymn for Her’ isn’t even the ‘Numbers’ best song, and although not all the songs hit the spot, they have so many in their set that are spine-tinglingly good. They’re still a bit rough around the edges, but that’s part of their charm, and coupled with their infectious delight in playing these great tunes, it’s all pretty life-affirming stuff, which left me feeling warm inside and with a big smile on my face. If this sounds your kind of thing, they’ll do the same for you.
