Marissa Nadler review

"Songs III: Bird on the Water"
Here lies an absolutely stunning collection of songs performed with such delicacy and beauty. Marissa's style of touching melancholy and sirenesc performance has been evident from the start with her first release - "Ballads of Living and Dying (2004)". With her 3rd release - "Songs III: Bird on the Water (2007)" she quite simply continues the theme with five extremely empathic musicians in the form of mandolin, cello, harp, keyboards & percussion.

All songs are written by Nadler except 2, "Famous Blue Raincoat," by Leonard Cohen & "Cortez the Killer," by Neil Young, which further go to exemplify the exacting place her music comes from. There doesn't seem to be any struggle for soul searching or desperate creativity, all of her music surpasses that and seems to be in the resting place few other artists achieve.

The mesmerising guitar arpeggios which she employs on many of her songs, become such an empowering feature, dazzling with rich overtones and hypnosis. Dreamy lyrics often speak of life changing stories and guilt free confessions, presented without any desperation or cry for help. Interestngly, rather than fade out, a lot of her songs actually "end".

Every song I've heard by her (that's 43 to date) seems such genuine perfection. In all my life of loving music (that's quite a few years to date) I've never heard so much a quantity of incredibly endearing compassionate material from one artist. A lot of this stems from an absolute pure clarity and acceptance of what she's doing.
