Waving not drowning. Fins ain’t what they used to be. No malfunctioning mechanical Great Whites or souped-up CG Makos here. This ocean chiller (incredibly, based on real events) about a couple (Blanchard Ryan and Daniel Travis) abandoned at sea by their dive boat, trying to avoid becoming scuba snacks, uses many very real sharks. Low-budget, DIY aesthetic - The Blair Fish Project? – and laudable bravado of the filmmakers and actors aside, though, at a brief yet overstretched 80 minutes, the film’s more successful PR stunt than horror classic. Open Water, on national release 10 September 04.
