More measured mayhem from the Chicago siblings.

When The Fiery Furnaces perform live they rarely pause to draw breath, so it’s often hard to distinguish when one song ends and the next begins. They’ve applied this same freewheeling approach to recording their second album, Blueberry Boat. Each track here is a mini opus comprising three or four different tunes rolled together into one carefully constructed cacophonous jam. The result is adventurously inventive and surprisingly tuneful, with Matt and Eleanor Freidberger’s vocal interplay backed by a combination of lo-fi guitar riffs, honky-tonk piano and a shedload of satisfyingly strange synthesized noises.
