Through adversity, the likely lads come up with the goods. Forget the tales of rock’n’roll debauchery, the drug habits and the stretches in the nick. What matters is the music, and it’s great music. The Libs’ second LP is a fine record that’s largely shaped by the band’s difficulties. Many of the songs explore Pete’s problems with drugs and their effect on his friendship with Carl, so it’s especially poignant to hear their voices dance around one another, singing brutally frank lyrics. The album has a wonderfully loose, effortless feel – little mistakes are included and Mick Jones’ production sounds delightfully spontaneous. Let’s hope they're around for a third.
