Three surrealist masterpieces.

Buñuel made movies “to show that this is not the best of all possible worlds”. These days he’d be put on Valium, but in a career spanning six decades he made do with a “primordial” daily gin and promptly turned provocation into cinematic art. After two memorable collaborations with Dali, Buñuel’s best work came in the 60s, by which time his satire of the bourgeoisie, fascism and Catholicism was in full swing.

Diary Of A Chambermaid (1964) attacks a respectable bourgeois household from within, as Jeanne Moreau’s calculating maid exploits her affluent employers’ fantasies for her own benefit. Belle De Jour (1967) similarly demolishes the façade of the bourgeoisie with bored housewife Catherine Deneuve whiling away her afternoons as a hooker in her local bordello.

The Milky Way (1969) is Buñuel’s attack on the Catholic scriptures, a bizarre road movie featuring the Marquis de Sade, an orgy and Jesus himself. Needless to say there will never be cinema like this again, and while it’s sometimes heavy going there’s no doubting the Martini-fuelled genius at work here. Essential viewing.
