Unhinged optimism from the Seattle survivors. Numerous records, interband mentalness, one dropped rape charge and a couple of screws in singer Isaac Brock’s jaw… By all accounts, Seattle’s MM should be heroin casualties six feet under. Brock cuts through personal adversity with 16 songs that leave the lo-fi stylings of previous outings for pin-sharp production. First single, Float On, is a perfect country-twangled anthem, but The View and Ocean Breathes Salty scale the same hooky heights. In the tongue-twisting Bukowski, Brock slams the deified alcoholic author in a lolloping banjo- and string-swept ditty. Like Pavement, if they were fronted by Frank Black and Tom Waits, it’s an album that reeks of an elegantly unhinged optimism.Modest Mouse - Good News For People Who Love Bad News, released 19 July 04 on Epic Records.
