Grown-up art students at London’s Arts Gallery. This summer the Arts Gallery, belonging to the recently renamed University Of The Arts London, is showing examples of work by a few of their alumni. Although this wouldn’t ordinarily be a to-write-home-about event, for colleges whose students have included people like Chris Ofili, Gillian Wearing and Patrick Caulfield, it is.Britart darling Sarah Lucas’ presence is felt through a series of unglamorous self-portraits. Julian Opie’s Blur-esque animated portrait, This Is Fiona, smiles and blinks at you while Mark Wallinger’s blind man who’s trapped on an escalator, preaches loudly in the brain-twisting video, Angel. More senior practitioners are represented by some of Hamish Fulton’s 80s conceptual but poetic journey posters. Featuring some of the art stars and iconified images that have helped define British art over the last few decades, Gifted remains accessible and vibrant while offering a tangible connection between well known contemporary artists and art schools. Gifted is at the Arts Gallery, University Of The Arts London, 65 Davies St, until 03 Sept 04. Admission is free.
