A tear and a smile. If Band Of Horses' Everything All The Time was one of 2006's best debuts, Cease To Begin must rank alongside LCD Soundsystem's Sound Of Silver as the sophomore release of 2007. The departure of Mat Brooke hasn't dented Ben Bridwell's hook-laden songwriting abilities, which marry twin loves of indie guitars and the timeless ache of country and western. When Cease To Begin rocks out it's euphoric, but there's a mournfulness shadowing each of these insistent melodies that will have you crying even as you smile. Band Of Horses - Cease To Begin, released 29 October 07 on Sub Pop.
