'The Funnies' returns to the kitsch sound of 'Saddic Gladdic' with a funky Avalanches style track, again great bassline and funky drums par excellence, also includes stylophone blips. 'Shadows' comes off as somewhere between Moloko oddball synth fun and the lushness of Goldfrapp (Felt Mountain). Second favourite track on album. 'Quadra Y Discos' is woozy abstract funky disco, similar to the occasional randomness of Aphex Twin. 'Ubformby' - Great beat, beautiful Hammond and strings. Very Spiritualized. 'Sci-Fi Staircase' standout point on the album, cute melodic bleeps and tight funky beats, with synth fx, immense sub-bass. 'Sorry I Make You Lush' - aka bleepy electro 'Setting Sun', then goes into a string section and theremin tangent, the track is dominated by an immense TB-303 bassline and star wars fx sprinkled in, the Avalanches never got this funky. 'Kwikwidetrax' is kiddy samples over cheesy 80's synth deep house. Reminiscent of Rae & Christian output. 'Nighty Night' - Beach House, the 80's synth from Kwikwidetrax remains, only with the bassline taken from 'Saddic Gladdic'. The hammond from Ubformby also returns but far more psychadelic. This is highly recommended stuff for any fan of Ninja Tune, deeply of Avalanches and Spritualized, with touches of Moloko and Goldfrapp. In fact the synth madness gubbins shares more with Moloko than Aphex Twin, only on 'Quadra Y Discos' do the Aphex inflences shine through like no other. This is easiest the most bleepiest album I now own. The album isn't what I was initially expecting, with the Aphex comparisons I was expecting an album like 'Selected Ambient Works 2' or like a Boards of Canada album, it is actually far more direct, with great house beats and basslines, along with some great melodies. I'd give it an excellent 8/10!!!
