"You can't." As a relative rookie in the art of Mark E. Smith Appreciation, it's difficult for me to describe The Fall, and when I came to discuss this situation with a fellow Fall lover once, he said "You can't describe them. They're just, well, Good." What more can I say? If there's a point to The Fall, it's this - they're different, take a lot of work to listen to, but ultimately, they're a thing to be cherished. That concept applies fully to Hex Induction Hour. As equally as accessible ('Jawbone And The Air-Rifle') as impenetrable ('Mere Pseud Mag Ed.'), it takes some listening until you work out the whole majesty and greatness of the record. Balancing punk sound and attitude against new wave concepts and ideas, Hex Induction Hour was The Fall and Mark E. Smith at their most inclusive and imaginative. From here, it was pop sensibility, chart success and sessions on The Tube. But that's another story. Fancy giving it a try? Don't say you haven't been warned.
