Uneasy listening from Nick Talbot. They say it¹s always the quiet ones you have to look out for and nowhere is this more keenly observed than on Gravenhurst’s (Nick Talbot) second album. Originally released last year on his Silent Age imprint, but now picked up by Warp, Flashlight Seasons might caress with its threadbare acoustica and delicate arrangements. But behind Talbot’s soft emasculated voice beats a haunting, almost funereal heart. Such a juxtaposition is best exemplified when the textured, uneasy listening of East Of The City is followed by the soothing folk plucking of Damage. Maybe Kings Of Convenience were right after all: quiet really is the new loud. Gravenhurst – Flashlight Seasons, released 28 June 04 on Warp Records.
