![]() now hear this (tracks and downloads)
Our pick of the new music that’s coming your way. dumb it down (atlantic) The Chicago conscious rapper mounts a sterling defence of his art on his new “street track” Dumb It Down, mocking those who tell him he’s going over people’s heads with long words and smart ideas. Rapper Gemini spoofs the prevailing wind (“We ain’t graduate from school / All big words aren’t cool”), while Lupe oozes suss all over his slow-moving, doom-laden synth beat. It’s a taster for the new album, The Coolest, due out in January. Brilliant. SY death of you (merok) Imagine The White Stripes if Meg had been possessed by the devil and wrested the mic off Jack. Such is the music of this boy/girl duo from East London. Death Of You, also released on a so-called “jizz-coloured” 7-inch, stirringly showcases their violently sexual punky noise.AP cut end (skud) Dubstep is no longer just a UK thing, as the Japanese producer Goth-Trad proves. His name suggests The Sisters Of Mercy meets folk, but his tenebrous metallic rhythms on tracks such as Cut End are even more disturbing. Highly recommended. PC waitin’ 4 tomorrow (brain donor) Tony Foster, aka Doggen, has spent the past decade-plus blasting out acid-fried guitar licks with Spiritualized and Julian Cope. Between jobs he also runs his own monstrously psychedelic power trio, Døgntank. This Hendrixy gem from their impossible-to-find debut CD just landed on his MySpace page. AP hands off my gold (simian mobile disco remix) The gorgeous voice of Celebration’s Katrina Ford is currently drifting through every nook and cranny of the web. To whet appetites for new album The Modern Tribe, 4AD are giving away a download of their track Hands Off My Gold, remixed by the Simian Mobile Disco boys. DJ atom (rough trade) Repeatedly hailed as “the next big thing” to no avail, it’s astounding that the swooping romances of indie eccentrics British Sea Power haven’t found a broader audience. Atom, the first taster from their next album, has just surfaced online. Go on, make 2008 their year. DJ sister siam (southern fried records) Following on from the success of Divebomb on Kitsune, Manchester’s The Whip return with Sister Siam, the first single to be taken from their debut album, due for release in March 2008. You can listen to the full track here, in all its hook-laden, synth-pop shininess. CP do you know medley (1965) Filling the gap between the city’s bleep and hip-hop scenes with ghetto-blasting dancehall beats, Sheffield’s Small Arms Fiya crew have been a party-starting soundsystem in demand this year. This version of their boy Toddla T’s Do U Know, which has finally got a release on 1965 Records, demonstrates why.PC mash's revenge (stone's throw) Dilla may have made a remarkable album on his deathbed in Donuts, but circumstance meant it lacked one crucial ingredient: vocals. Doom and Guilty Simpson do the honours over the late producer’s poignant piano loop; Fire (Simpson) and dry ice (Doom) combining in a glorious tribute.SY Tips by: Paul Clarke, David Jones, Andrew Perry, Chris Power, Steve Yates.
