The real Eurovision. Luke Morris’ critically acclaimed Cinema 16 DVD showcased 16 short films by British directors, and confirmed the audience appetite for this artform. He repeats the format with Cinema 16: European Short Films, a diverse mix of genres, styles and content complete with directors’ commentary.Contributors include: Krzysztof Kieslowski, Jan Kounen, Jean-Luc Godard, Jan Svankmajer, Peter Mullen and Chris Morris. The films entertain, unsettle or astound with aesthetic and technical wizardry. Patrice Leconte’s Le Batteur focuses on the antics of an orchestra’s drummer, Lukas Moodysson’s disturbing Talk comments on chronic loneliness and Virgil Widrich’s Oscar-nominated Copy Shop comprises 18,000 photocopied digital frames. Some of these shorts have never been seen and, for the more established directors, hint at the blueprint that watermarks their later work. Lars von Trier’s Nocturne was his graduation piece. This is Eurovision at its best, and not a nil point amongst them. Extras All the films have commentaries, most by their directors. Cinema 16: European Short Films, out now on Cinema 16.
