Decemberists - Royal Festival Hall

Oregon five-piece come unstuck on the big stage
The Decemberists never seemed quite at ease in the austere setting of the Royal Festival Hall on a miserable September evening. As part of its expensive rebranding as the Southbank centre the Hall has been renovated to improve the acoustics, which were widely judged to be poor. On this showing you’d be hard pressed to tell.

The band’s sound never seemed big enough to fill the space, and the experience was oddly disconnecting - like listening to music with only one earphone in. Nor did they offer up much in the way of stage presence: frontman Colin Meloy seemed the only member who was happy to be there. Overall, I was perhaps most disappointed by the setlist, with several of the better songs from the latest album conspicuous by their absence.

I’m not a big fan of gigs in this kind of venue (Sufjan Stevens at the Barbican earlier this year was a notable exception), but this one was a particular let down. A band I would happily have discussed in the same sentence as Arcade Fire have revealed themselves to be some way short of that high standard. Shame.
