![]() suky best 'about running'
Running away. Running seems to inspire much in people; a time for contemplation, a time to not think and a time to do something good for someone else. The 3rd Great North Run Moving Image Commission by Suky Best brings all these elements together in an eight-minute animation concentrating on the runner. You follow hand-drawn black silhouette figures on their journey to the finishing line, through a variety of camera angels and perspectives. Oddly, the figures are alone - where are all the other runners? And then, intermittently, an obscure illusion is created as the figure moves through a void area created by the other runners who are invisible until this collision of beings occurs. These fragmented moments of occlusion add a layer of abstraction to a rather uninspiring piece; you wait expectantly for a runner dressed as a fairy, or a fancy-dressed dog, to come into contact and weave in and out of view of the other runners. The runners’ only accompaniment is the audio of individual voices telling their Great North Run stories. The faceless, characterless blobs suddenly get a voice, although it’s a shame that they don’t elevate the animation from a rather monotonous vision. Suky Best – About Running is at the Baltic, Gateshead, until 14 October 07.
