Level best. With an heroically obtuse name, and unrivalled kudos with the ATP/Pitchfork set, this Brooklyn combo are almost the dictionary definition of US underground rock. Doubtless in an effort to remedy their impecunity, the Fav’ve spent months honing this fourth album into an ambitious, filler-free, modernist-sounding beast which laughs in the face of underachievement. Equal parts whiny Flaming Lips whimsy and, as ever, snarly Fugazi/Shellac punk rock, their sonic remit also this time includes shoegazery guitar architecture, and, on Patty Le, a Devo-esque disco-punker eerily similar to The Hives’ forthcoming collaboration with Pharrell. Overall, Let’s Stay Friends feels very “now”. The next level beckons. Les Savy Fav - Let's Stay Friends, released 01 October 07 on Wichita.
