Nick Drake - The Final Word
This album is a gift to NIck Drake fans, to everyone else however I doubt it will really register. As a Nick Drake fan I'm being brutally honest in saying that this album serves only to verify that Island records and John Wood got it right the first time round. Each of Nicks three studio albums stand as solid testement to his talent and I feel that the tracks here are, to put it politely, a bit of a curiosity, although the version of Three Hours is exceptional, and of course 'Tow the Line' being a heart stopper for most fans. Robert Kirbys orchestration has prettified 'Time of no reply' ,and Richard Thompsons guitar on 'Thoughts of Mary Jane' still jarrs(sorry,I love Richard Thompson). 'Hanging on a Star' kicks off in fine style but I feel that previous vocal tracks on the 'Time of no reply' album verion are superior. As for 'Riverman' and 'Mayfair', its great to hear alternate versions but Harry Robinsons strings on the original Riverman are some of the finest I've heard.
I dunno, I love Nick Drakes music and this offering , coinciding with the 30th anniversary of his death is timely and poigniant, although ultimately saddening.
