A portrait of the cult cartoonist. Watching Crumb, Terry “Ghost World” Zwigoff’s extraordinary documentary about comic artist Robert Crumb, may leave you feeling inspired, repulsed or just a bit grubby. It begins as a glimpse into the processes behind eccentric Crumb’s cartoon satire of American life. Which usually involves some sexed-up, meaty thighed, headless woman being put upon by skinny assed nerdy men, not to mention lots of piggybacks – Crumb’s favoured bedroom antic. Emerging via interviews, though, with Crumb’s family, his ex-girlfriends, and his self-professed, self-loathing wife is a grim portrait of a troubled childhood, obsessive compulsion and disturbed sexuality. Crumb channelled his woes with pen and ink, others around him weren’t so lucky. But, like Crumb’s art, Zwigoff finds the laughs amid the horror. There are no extras on the DVD but this complex story deserves countless revisits. Crumb, out now on Optimum Releasing.
