![]() onedotzero08 preview
The best of the fest. The world’s biggest digital film love-in is upon us, and this year it’s harder than ever to pick out the highlights. All the regular festival strands are here, from wavelength 04’s roll-call of standout music promos, to j-star 04’s showcase of the best from Japan and lens flare 04, which gives gaming visuals a new lease life by putting them on the big screen. If you’re really interested in the future of film, though, the extended play 04 and wow+flutter 04 programmes are essential viewing. Both showcase shorts from all over the world that haven’t been smuggled into your consciousness via hyper-hip ads and/or pop promos. Gems like E-Baby from the Paris-based Pleix, Anthem by NY animators Psyop and the BAFTA-winning JoJo In The Stars from Studio AKA in London, all of which we’re currently streaming on Collective. ![]() Highlights really are too numerous to list, but look out for Virgil Widrich's panicky found-footage masterpiece, Fast Film, and Payoon Worachananan’s Sweet Vdo, wherein tin-toy dragons and kangaroos follow a rabbit who’s then saved from a nasty fall by a magic balloon. It’s looks great but lay off the stilton before bedtime, Payoon. ![]() This year’s features section includes the world premiere of Sneakers, a doc about trainers, which ties in neatly with Nike Art Of Speed – a collection of 15 shorts funded by the corporate behemoth. You can also catch the first three episodes of cult anime director Kon Satoshi’s claustrophobic new TV series Paranoia Agent, being shown for the first time in Europe. But best of all, though, is the international premiere of Japanese graphic artist and animator Imaitoons’ prison breakout adventure, Dead Leaves. ![]() If all that isn’t enough, Sh*te + Shynola: A Retrospective sees everyone’s digi favourites introducing hitherto unknown gems, while Collective pets Ninja Tune present a special mix from their video vault. And did I mention the live events?
