Heavy weather in Turkey. A big hit at Cannes 2003, Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s study of dead-end lives in wintry Istanbul finally limps our way like the wounded dog it so determinedly is. Filtered through a middle-aged photographer and the sloppy country cousin who turns up on his doorstep, it’s bleak, slow, sparsely populated, laced with meaningful non sequiturs, pregnant pauses, precise camera moves and – whisper it – the odd grim gag or two. Turkish delight for morose arthouse fans. Heavy, heavy weather for everybody else.Uzak, on selected release 28 May 04.
