![]() bad education
Almodóvar’s masterclass. His own troubled Catholic education proves fertile ground for Pedro Almodóvar in his latest, effortlessly brilliant melodrama. Gael Garcia Bernal’s cross-dressing femme fatale is the inspired twist for a modern-day film noir (or, given the habitual expressionistic colour schemes, film rouge) that drags in the director’s usual obsessions – the church, cinema, forbidden passions and the odd transvestite or two. It’s both a compendium and, along with the gentler, more likeable Talk To Her, perhaps the crowning achievement of his career to date. Bad Education, on selected release 21 May 04.
