A different kind of hip-hop. For someone who resents being boxed in with Madlib, Doom and Dilla, Jneiro Jarel has an uncannily similar approach. Spacey productions, more monikers than you can shake a phonebook at and a rap technique at best described as unorthodox underpin this Houston (now living in Philly) hip-hopper’s work. But where most of the above work in tightly-defined loops, Jarel’s latest album is looser and more improvisational. Consequently it’s overlong, although the hallucinatory, whirlpool-like sound is extremely effective in creating its own private world. Shape Of Broad Minds - Craft Of The Lost Art, released 03 September 07 on Lex.
