Moving pictures at London’s ICA.

The motion graphics spectacular that is the onedotzero film festival is here again, bigger and better than ever at London’s ICA (28 May-06 June), before embarking on a 60-day tour of the world. Highlights include Shynola and Ninja retrospectives, Imaitoons’ prison breakout feature, Dead Leaves, and Paranoia Agent, Japanese anime director Kon’s first foray into TV.

This year, as well as streaming new films from onedotzero08’s crop of small but perfectly formed digital masterworks, Collective is offering you a unique opportunity to contribute to the innervisions strand of discussions, which aims to “deconstruct and demystify the creative process”.

films from this year's festival

Quietus - Precursor
Welcome to a microcosmic organo-tech world, a complete cycle of artificial life evolving on screen, courtesy of London’s Precursor Studio. Lush graphics combine with a soundtrack by techno DJ Si Begg to complete the eerie effect. Specially created for onedotzero08.

What Barry Says – Simon Robson
An uncompromising critique of US foreign policy according to Barry, the filmmaker’s lefty hippy friend from down the pub. Director Robson brilliantly interprets Barry’s monologue using iconographic visual styles, from war pamphlets to stencil graffiti.

Violence - Rex Crowle
Wrestler, Chad Montreaux, welcomes us to the world of violence and its voracious appetite in this vivid short, made using flash. A tongue-in-cheek look at the darker side of humanity from video games designer and animator Rex Crowle.

A Friend I Know - Yi Bi Hu
Hailing from Shanghai, Yi Bu Hu created this short film while studying in London. It’s the everyday story of a wolf-headed man who unwittingly becomes the butt of local malice when his menacing canine appearance sends him to his doom.

RND#00 Safety Procedures - Richard Fenwick
This is Fenwick’s 20th film in his RND series, exploring man’s contention with modern life and technology. This time he targets the absurdity of airline safety procedures, played out in graphic, safety-card detail. Created especially for onedotzero8.

E-baby - Pleix
A baby grows inside a computer-controlled incubator with a gloved robotic hand as its only source of “motherly” comfort. Which is fine(ish), until a glitch causes the nurture system to break down. Pleix are a virtual community of digital artists based in Paris, music is by Bleip.

Anthem - Psyop
This is New York animation collective Psyop’s “manifesto” film. A fever-dream stab at commercialism in a fairy tale landscape of rainbow hills, comic characters and pipette-beaked birds. OK? It’s being shown as part of the wow+flutter strand of the festival which features new graphic-led shorts.

JoJo In The Stars – Studio AKA
Marc Craste’s story of love, self-sacrifice and murderous jealousy, played out in a nightmarish monochrome circus, won this year’s BAFTA for Best Animated Short. It’ll be shown in full at onedotzero08, as part the extended play section which showcases innovative short films and animations.
