Three tracks exclusively in session from singer/songwriter Martin Craft.

April 28 saw London’s 93 Feet East play host to the latest Collective session, showcasing some of the most interesting new music around. Second on the bill was Australian singer/songwriter Martin Craft and his band, who played songs from his recent mini album, I Can See It All Tonight, plus a couple of new tracks which will appear on his forthcoming debut album.

“It’s pretty all over the place, which worried me for a bit,” says Martin about his music, “But people seem to like that at the moment. There’s bossa novas, there’s country hints and disco bits. It’s quite colourful and romantic maybe.” Colourful and romantic is a good description.

His debut release (“a little ramshackle, home-recorded mini album that hopefully someone will like”) is a beautiful collection of six songs. A delicate blend of late-night stories, timeless melodies and catchy loops. Martin is currently holed up in an East London studio working on his first full-length album, which is due for release in the autumn. There’s also a 10-inch on the way, featuring new song Emily Snow, scheduled for early summer.

Martin is also busy playing live with a selection of London sessions planned. Along with appearances at a number of festivals, including The Green Man Festival (along with Adem and Four Tet), Summer Sundae (with The Super Furry Animals, Lambchop and Kings Of Convenience), and of course Glastonbury.

Is there a theme that hangs together in Martin’s music? “I think there’s a certain kind of idealism, searching out something a bit joyful, or a bit more than real-life,” he says. “But then there’s little bits of darkness reflecting what life really is. I like the kind of magical aspect of music, the way it can sprinkle this kind of happy dust or sad dust on the world.”
