Way Of The Tosser
As soon as you hear Gary Brewer utter the words, "That's me. I'm a tosser" you know instantly that you are watching a group of filmmakers who feverishly enjoy the creation of character. The cast, led by Tim Doiron, April Mullen and Ryan Tilley, completely immerse themselves in the cutthroat world of rock, paper, scissors, as far as Doiron's Brewer and his arch enemy Baxter Pound entering themselves in the actual 2006 Rock, Paper, Scissors World Championships.

Gary, his girlfriend Holly Brewer (no relation, yet) and Gary's best friend Trevor run through the rigorous training exercises involved in preparation for the event, including diet, wristwork, and even forms of meditation. Whilst the troupe go out to parody the ridiculousness of the event, the explanations by the administrators of the game reveal that the competitors are aware of the bizarre nature of the event, and thus also know that any notion of them taking the championships too seriously would leave them open to mockery. Thus the parody never leans towards the spiteful, allowing the audience to take stock of the borderline surrealist characterisation that enters the peripheral.

It is the meticulous attention to detail in character that then becomes the most striking, as not only are their farcical antics hilarious (the cameo from Tim's uncle who emerges from behind a bush to aggressively challenge his student) but Gary's desperation to convince everyone that the fate of each game is in his own hands as opposed to blind luck is perhaps an accurate consideration of the human desire to control their own destiny. Unique and genre bending, it's infectious to see filmmakers completely absorbed in their work.
