Boogie Nights meets Rashomon’s multi-perspective storylines, in a flashy account of porn legend John Holmes (Val Kilmer) and his speculative involvement in LA’s infamous 1981 Wonderland Avenue murders. This is a weak excuse to indulge a bunch of actors in their junkie role-play fantasies while plugging a rose-tinted retro soundtrack. It also sidelines the most interesting relationships (how Holmes’ wife mothers him and his girlfriend) and fails to realise – or care – that the tedious Holmes himself is basically a dick. Wonderland, on selected release 07 May 04.
