A forceful proposition with charm. Do you like lo-fi charm? You do? Well you might like Hot Chip. Five scruffy fellas from South East London who, holed up in a bedroom, have produced an album of deadpan ditties, chock-full of funny noises, a kitchen sink of reference points and, er, charm. Their tongue is firmly lodged in their cheek as they decide a cheesy sax solo might be a good idea - somehow it is. As is Alexis Taylor’s reedy falsetto, wondering “how the hell Stevie Wonder can see”, when it’s matched by Joe Goddard’s faintly ridiculous baritone as he sings about cruising around Putney in his Peugeot. Preposterous, touching and brilliant. Hot Chip – Coming On Strong, released 17 May 04 on Moshi Moshi Records.
