The sculptor changes tack at London’s White Cube. One of Antony Gormley’s signature clay abstract figures rests against the wall outside the White Cube gallery in despair. And so it should. Gormley’s giant, rust-coloured steel Angel Of The North has become an albatross around the neck of the sculptor. In this show, however, he honestly attempts to move away from the people’s stylistic choice and do something different. The results are mixed. Upstairs are three faceless figures, this time made of miniature steel blocks like some post-techno Lego, that are either boring or filled with emotion depending on your view. The real highlight of the show is Clearing I, a room filled with dark metal hoops that pack the space like a giant unravelling ball of steel yarn. Oscillating between something solid but filled with so much space, this experiential piece points to a really interesting new direction for an artist tainted by the mainstream. Antony Gormley: Clearing is at the White Cube, London, until 29 May 04.
