Inspirational sounds. "When making this record I went through loads and loads of music, honing in on certain songs, how they were written and why they had an immediate effect on me." Canadian producer Dan "Caribou" Snaith is carefully thumbing through an enviable vinyl collection at his North London flat, looking for key tunes that have influenced the making of his fourth album, Andorra. It's a psychedelic pop gem that sounds as authentic as the records he's inspired by, despite being written and recorded on a computer in this very same spare bedroom. Here's what hits the turntable. Wire - Outdoor Miner (Chairs Missing, 1978) "Some people will see Wire and think post-punk band, but when I hear Outdoor Miner I think more about the ways the melodies are interacting. This is just a perfect condensed pop song." useful links wikipedia: wire bbc music: wire Lothar And The Hand People - Yes, I Love You (Space Hymn, 1970) "They were a late 60s stoner West Coast psych band. They used lots of electronic instruments and a theramin, hence the 'hand' thing. This song is one I listened to a lot. It's just a really simple love song lullaby. But where youd expect them to use guitars and things they use drum machines and synths. It's just an unusual approach." useful links www.lotharandthehandpeople.com myspace: lothar and the hand people Albert Ayler - Heart Love (New Grass, 1968) "He's a free jazz saxophonist. His sound has a gospel/marching band kind of tone to it. This track is from an album called New Grass which is generally disregarded by serious jazz fans because he incorporated rock and soul, and all sorts of stuff into it. But it's another example of a great pop song with all these ideas thrown over the top of it which is as close to a blueprint for my music as you can get really." useful links myspace: albert ayler bbc music: albert ayler wikipedia: albert ayler James Holden - 10101 (The Idiots Are Winning, 2006) "I haven't been really excited about electronic or dance music in a while, but his music has an incredible way of building and falling apart; it seems to really breathe. It sounds very electronic, but it also sounds like its very much alive." useful links collective: james holden 'the idiots are winning' review www.jamesholden.org myspace: i am the real james holden The Zombies - This Will Be Our Year (Odessey And Oracle, 1968) "It's the epitome of that back-of-the-throat pop; a song that immediately punches you in the gut the minute it starts. And all packed into a tiny three minutes." useful links wikipedia: the zombies myspace: the zombies
