Zombies in North London.

There are lots of offbeat things about Shaun Of The Dead. Aside from the slightly grating tag, “rom-zom-com”, it’s a British comedy and it’s funny. From the title it might seem like this is some spoof of the George Romero classic. In fact, it’s truer to the spirit of Romero’s vision of comatose consumer society than the straight remake also released this month.

Shaun translates the best of current British sitcom and sketch comedy to cinema. And what with this being London suburbia, peopled by twentysomething PlayStation-obsessed slackers, the local boozer is their hideaway utopia of choice, rather than the shopping mall of Romero’s original. The results feel a bit small screen sometimes, but unlike many other native offerings this film has its own identity, is well written and will actually make you laugh.
