This is the first solo album by Adem, who is one third of critically aclaimed band FRIDGE. The music is much more accesible than FRIDGE primarily due to the fact that Adem now sings, with a voice that at times has been compared with a number of different artists from Bono to Jeff Buckley. The music is acoustic based but with a modern production and a whole range of unusual instruments being used making it far more interesting than somone singing away with their acoustic guitar being plucked.
It opens with Statued a slow number which sets the tone and style for the album with the music sounding like your tucked up in a tavern on a winter night with a roaring log fire. Ringing in my ear picks up the pace with lovely upbeat music and lyrics with a sarcastic view on that age old problem of the end of a relationship. Gone Away slows things back down and I feel it is the weakest track on the album. However saying that it's one of those tracks where it depends on the mood your in when listening to it. As sometimes it is a wonderfully emotional track and on other listens it just doesn't do anything for me.Bearing in mind this is a debut album and I feel every other track is a gem in it's own right whatever mood I'm in then I think we can forgive Adem for this.Cut maintains the slow pace but with fantastic dreamy vocals and a fantastic slide guitar part that means you just can't help sitting back closing your eyes and drifting off for 5 minutes. These are your friends is the obvious single choice and comes across as a fantastic epic which is impressive considering the acoustic approach. You can just see the crowd at the gigs chanting the end lyrics in unison,"Everybody needs some help sometimes". It is this general warmth of emotion that shines through the whole album and which gives it such great appeal. Everything you need has a fantastically upbeat chorus making you want to tap and hit whatever's close to you in unison. Long drive home has some more sumptuios vocals all over it and that same daydream feeling as Cut. Pillow is one of those tracks people will either love or hate. I love it Adem's vocals accompanied only by an autoharp creates one of the most beautiful and brave tracks I have ever heard on a debut album. One in a million has a wonderfully full sound to it which at times reminds me of Beck and Sparklehorse. Finally we finish with There will always be which starts sounding as a homage to Bjork and finishes telling us "there will always be room at my table for you" Lets hope there is enough room for plenty more music of this calabre. The only problem I have with this album is that lazy music journalists will just pigeonhole it in the New Folk bracket and it won't get the attention that it deserves. 9.5/10
