Desert rats. A promise is a promise. When Gram Parsons, patron saint of alt country, checked out of this world his best friend and road manager Phil Kaufman (Jackass’ Johnny Knoxville, surprisingly good) kept his pledge to cremate the singer’s body in their spiritual home, Joshua Tree. That he had to hijack the coffin and outrun the cops to do so makes up the mileage of director David Caffrey’s endearing road movie. Financed on scraps, the seams occasionally show in one-dimensional support roles and some awkwardly anachronistic soundtrack choices, but to say it all burns out rather than fades away is presumably a compliment.
