Whether to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune… This book is essentially a biography, one of a moderately successful actor (he’s worked with Alan Ayckbourn, John Malkovich, Anthony Perkins) and not someone you’d give your right arm to read their life story. But you should as it’s a brilliantly written account of what it’s really like to be an actor. From the humiliations of Chicken Tonight ads and sweaty lion costumes, to the indignities of accidental sprinkler-system activations and homosexual kisses with Timothy Spall, this guy’s been there. He’s done it. He’s suffered. And it’s very funny. Simkins’ story is a charming inspiration and a terrible warning to anyone who’s ever thought about acting. What’s My Motivation? by Michael Simkins is out now, published by Ebury Press.
