adem 'homesongs'

Home-made folktronica without the tronica.

Solo projects can be disappointing beasts, particularly when a guitarist turns singer (sit down, John Squire). Fortunately, the debut album from Adem Ilhan, bass player with electronica’s teen geniuses Fridge, reveals wisdom and a lush voice. The folktronica influence of Four Tet (Fridge’s Kieran Hebden) is unmistakeable in Adem’s seamless use of odd percussion, but a downbeat approach, country twang and sharp lyrics evoke Joni Mitchell rather than Four Tet’s laptop tricks. Homesongs, then, is true to its name - infinitely comforting, rather than something which should be spun at a club. (9/10) Anna Chapman 12 March 04

Adem – Homesongs, released 29 March 04 on Domino.
