Bird-brained. You have to wonder what American indie kids, with their TV On The Radios and Animal Collectives, make of some of the stodgy, derivative slop we churn out in the name of independent rock. But as far as copycat indie goes, Leeds’ Pigeon Detectives are at least miles ahead of the pack. Wait For Me is not so much an album as 12 rabble-rousing would-be singles delivered at frenetic pace, bouncing between Libertines-y jerky verses and Arctic Monkeys-y shouty choruses. The theme is failure in love, and there are some great lines (see especially age-gap romance, Take Her Back). “You know I love you,” bellows singer Matt Bowman, with a wink, “so take off your clothes. It’s alright, it’s alright, it’s alright…” The Pigeon Detectives – Wait For Me, released 28 May 07 on Dance To The Radio.

I'm no big fan of the Pigeon Detectives but they effectively doo doo all over either of those two bands who I've had the displeasure of hearing on a few occasions and they could only be described as ‘music’ if you are deaf and spot their CD on a coffee table! Just because no one ‘gets’ a particular type of ‘music’ doesn’t make it immediately cool it usually means that the actual melody and tunes are garbage as is the case with the Animal Collective (and to a lesser extent TV On The Radio) who’s ‘music’ could just as easily be written and played by a nursery school class, absolute trash and some people think it’s cool, I despair! The emperors new clothes always springs to mind when I hear critically acclaimed rubbish like them.Anyway back to TPD who have made a very enjoyable album and if to make an album actually listenable is a fault with British indie then long may it continue. Personally I think there are loads of samey bands in Britain but I’d rather have it this way with the cream rising to the top than have arty nonsense just for the hell of it! |
