So then. Does it live up to the hype? The answer you’ll be pleased to know (in my book at least) is a resounding yes. Franz Ferdinand have not only managed to achieve their oft-quoted mission statement (“Music to make girls dance” - not to mention boys) but have also created an album that’s totally engaging even if your knees aren’t up to it. Basically, it’s down to bloody good tunes coupled with a musicianship that oozes charisma. They may be known for “arty” leanings but there’s no pretension here - just a debut that’s easily as good as This Is It. (9/10) Matt Walton 06 February 04
