Hit the road. “I thought I’d go home a changed man, rich with wisdom and hope. Instead, my back hurts and I’m greasy.” Fired, dumped and evicted, all within a fateful few days in September 2001, New York cartoonist Jensen blows his savings on a 60-day Greyhound pass and embarks on his own American road trip. Couch-surfing across states on the hospitality of his internet buddies, his days are marked by countless hours endured in bus station limbo and a failure to provoke anything resembling “real” adventure. Dogged by his own uncertain future, Jensen collects his friends’ stories for inspiration, capturing each one in a low-key, ink-and-wash style packed with fleeting details, offbeat humour and an empathy for everyday lives that transcends Generation X stereotypes. A lack of cinematic vistas, life-changing epiphanies or post-9/11 theorising may set Red Eye, Black Eye apart from standard road-trip narratives, but Jensen proves a perceptive travelling companion for anyone who has ever wondered if their life was happening elsewhere. Red Eye, Black Eye by K Thor Jensen, out now published by Alternative Comics.
