Flower power. It’s all encapsulated in the spine-tingling moment when Fontella Bass sings, “Swallows me, into the deep” on Breathe. It’s not just the recurrent meditations on mortality that makes Ma Fleur even more heart-rendingly beautiful than 2002’s Everyday, it’s also how The Cinematic Orchestra’s new album actually feels. For as you’re slowly engulfed by the strings and dark undercurrents it seems less like a suite of music penned for an intended forthcoming film than it does the soundtrack to a lifetime of both love and regret passing before your eyes. The Cinematic Orchestra - Ma Fleur, released 07 May 07 on Ninja Tune.

Cinematic orchestra have yet to let me down on their previous work, and I was highly anticipating this release. Unfortunately this new album lacks the succinct procession of quality tracks previous albums have offered. However, every time I listen to Ma Fleur it gets better, and usually when an album takes a while to come alive it is a stronger piece.Time will tell I guess but there is little that stands out yet... |
