(Another) Unsung Dance Music Genius Rediscovered. Despite coming over as some hip retrospective of another late 70s/early 80s producer, this CD has occasional pockets of freedom, intimacy and colour. Cellist Arthur Russell beguiled an NYC music scene by cajoling traditional Philadelphia/R&B session players into performing spontaneous avant-garde funk. In doing so Russell created a legacy of string drones, dulcet croons and chaotic, lurching rhythms. Whereas commercial tracks on this compilation appear weak and dated, others stand out as being rapturous, open and beautiful.
