Great apes. If being charged with reflecting the nation’s zeitgeist weighs heavily on Arctic Monkeys’ young shoulders, you’d never guess it. The follow-up to their chart-topping debut is equally as crammed with indecently hooky pop tunes, but sees them playing even fiercer and faster (12 tracks in under 38 minutes), while broadening their structural horizons to tap everything from ska and reggae, to prog-metal and post hardcore. Alex Turner’s sharp narrative ear is still tuned to the revealing banalities of everyday life, the whole band admirably responsive to emotional nuance, even while they crank out the crazed likes of If You Were There, Beware. Arctic Monkeys - Favourite Worst Nightmare, released 23 April 07 on Domino.
