Live Flesh [Pedro Almodovar, 1997]
by: Mike  Wednesday 07 January 2004
It’s a kind of soap opera thriller, but with class.

This is a very good example of Almodovar’s skill in controlling the mood of a piece, from the funny to erotic to melodramatic to the shocking. This thriller starts with a typically funny and sad scene where Isabel (Penelope Cruz) is forced to give birth in a bus in a deserted Madrid. We then move forward to when the baby, Victor, has grown up. What follows is one of Almodovar’s deliciously complicated storylines, which features passion, obsession, jealousy, sex, wheelchairs, and guns (not necessarily in that order), and is chock full of twists and turns.

It’s simply a joy from start to finish.
